Tips for Describing Yourself Online

Once you have filed in the basic information on your online dating profile and have great online dating photos ready to upload, you are left with filling out the "About Me" or mini-essay section.

The best way to approach this section is to remember that you cannot capture all that you are in a limited amount of space or words. Tips for Describing Yourself OnlineYou shouldn't feel pressure to make sure that this section tells everything about you because it can't. You just want to present enough information to give someone an idea of how compatible the two of you would be and be intriguing enough that someone wants to learn more.

When you remember that the purpose of describing yourself online is not to necessarily win someone over right away (although that is great if it happens), but to pique curiosity, you can keep yourself from going overboard. You don’t want to stuff your self-description with too many details. You also don’t want to drive yourself crazy trying to compose your self-description. Online dating is supposed to be fun.

The way you approach the "About Me" section will say a lot about you. And you don't have to worry about making it perfect or following a formula because someone who is interested in you will respond to the way you present yourself.

For the "About Me" section, you can:

  • Be whimsical-Make a list of random facts about yourself.
  • Give future date ideas-Make a list of your favorite pastimes and activities.
  • Traditional prose-Write a paragraph to introduce yourself but don't try to talk about all aspects of your life. Pick a few important themes.
  • Look ahead-Write a little about your goals and what you look forward to: places you want to travel or a professional achievement you are working towards.
  • Share the spotlight-Use this section to briefly introduce yourself and then write about what you want to get out of online dating. This is not a time to talk about all your pet peeves, however. Remain positive about the kind of dating experience you want.

Nice way to put it, Gordon. Thanks for sharing. We seem to make a lot of mistakes first with the profile photo and then with the info we reveal about ourselves. There are so many unspoken rules but it could be really easy to get it right and genuine.. Btw I also like the idea that when applicable, you can ask your closest friend(s) to pick up several things which are 'you'.

(If you want to keep it very brief you can also do some 'photo dating' based on facematch :P)
