Check Your Online Dating Profile for Grammatical Errors
A freelance writer wrote a column in the Chicago Tribune about the perils of online dating and if you are new to online dating or even if you have a good amount of experience, you may find that reading someone else's perspective is helpful. You know what you are looking for, but you may not be able to imagine how other people view the online dating experience.
Since the author of the piece is a writer, one of her pet peeves is seeing an online dating profile
with incomplete sentences and misspelled words--in particular, dating profiles and messages that are composed completely in lowercase letters and in the abbreviated style that is associated with text messages.
When you start to text someone once a dating relationship has begun, then you can write in a more abbreviated style, but since first impressions matter, it might be good to use standard grammar in your profile and for introductory messages to potential dates.
And rather than feeling intimidated that there are people out there who might take note of errors in your writing, why not decide that you will run the text of your dating profile through spell-check or ask a trusted friend to read it? Even people who are great at writing need someone to edit what they’ve written. Sometimes it is hard to see a mistake or flaw in your own writing because you have spent so much time with it. This extra effort will pay off because the thought you put into crafting your dating profile can yield better responses.
It can be easy to read about what bothers other people and dismiss them as being 'picky' but while the woman sharing her experiences in the Chicago Tribune does express a desire to see profiles and messages that are well-written, she seems to also be concerned with finding someone who is honest. And being honest in your profile will make it easier for people reading it to respond appropriately, even if a few words are misspelled.
